As we head into the cooler fall and winter months, it is important to both look back at all we have accomplished in 2016 and look forward to everything that the next year holds in store!
This past year, we expanded the holdings in our Juniper Preserve which contains a large pitcher plant bog. This bog is home to carnivorous pitcher plants and sundews, as well as the beautiful white-fringed orchid. With careful management by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers, the bog had a record number of orchids this summer: 1,385 to be exact!
In addition, after overcoming numerous obstacles, the Foundation has protected a property called “Crescent Point,” just inside the mouth of Weeks Bay. This marsh is only 4.5 acres, but it provides sheltered feeding grounds for many birds, including Clapper Rails and Soras.
Lastly, we acquired 9 acres on Fish River which will be added to the Weeks Bay Reserve’s pitcher plant bog boundaries. This property contains a well-preserved wetland drainage corridor that flows into Fish River.
Do you know what all these land protection victories have in common? OUR MEMBERS AND DONORS!
The work that we do every day would not be possible without our supporters who are committed to conserving coastal Alabama and making the future of our local environment a priority. We have much more work to do, so we ask you to consider making a contribution to the 2016 Annual Fund. This investment will enable us to protect even more woods, wetlands, and waterways.
Thank you to all our members and donors for your past support. If you haven’t contributed to the Foundation before we hope you will give to our Annual Fund and become a part of the Weeks Bay Family, too!
